Succeeding In Hairdressing School

Posted by admin 1 October, 2009

If you are interested in hairdressing as a career, you may be considering hairdresser schools. To get the most from hairdressing schools, however, you need to do more than just apply and attend classes. To get the best job and to get the most value from your tuition, you need to work to get the maximum amount of benefits from your beauty school. Here’s how you can succeed:

1) Compare hair design schools carefully. Beauty schools vary widely in the programs they offer. Compare cosmetology schools to find a program that offers all the classes you want, but also offers extra programs and support if you need it.

2) Take classes outside your field of specialty. Taking cosmetology, esthetics, and hairdressing classes is a good way to get a solid foundation in beauty. Also, the things you learn in one class can often be applied in another. Learning more helps you succeed in all your classes.

3) Take active notes in class. Hairdresser schools usually require some course work and some practical training. When in the classroom, take good notes. This means really listening and taking short-form notes rather than trying to capture every word your instructor is saying. Try writing out your ideas in your own words – it will help you remember the major ideas from class.

4) Get academic help. Many hairdressing schools have counselors who can help you with things like note taking or study skills. Some hair design schools even offer workshops for students about getting great grades. If your beauty school offers help like this, be sure to take advantage of it. Learning how to get great grades is a skill, and you can learn it.

5) Read outside of class. Talk to your instructors and other grads of beauty schools about the industry trade journals and books they read. Use these recommendations to read about cosmetology and hairdressing. Especially focus on trade journals aimed at the beauty industry – it’s a great way to learn about new trends and technologies that you need to know. Many cosmetology schools have subscriptions to industry trade journals or can help you find these resources.

6) Practice more. A large component of your hairdressing courses will include practicing. You can get better at hairstyling and hairdressing even faster by practicing more. Give free haircuts or styles to friends and family and ask your instructor for more practice time. It will pay off as your skills build and your grades improve.
