The Effects Of Heat On Hair

Posted by admin 25 October, 2008

With the various amounts of styling needed for different hairstyles it can take its toll on your hair and if caution isn’t taken then you can end up with quite damaged hair, breakage and what turns out to be hair that becomes more frustrating to work with.

Heat to an extent can be fine for the hair, but when you are styling regularly and are using a hair dryer as well as straighteners or curling tongs then before long you can start to see damage taking place and understandably you may not want to use the straighteners any less than you do and may depend on them quite a lot and if your pressed for time then naturally a hair dryer helps speed thengs up when your needing to get your hair dried on time.

Any chance that you can though, even if its just after every few washes you should try and take as much of the excess moisture from your hair naturally with a towel, leave it in place and let it do the work for you, and any straightening creams that will make the job easier for you and mean less time needed of the straighteners actually touching your hair will make a difference.

Even when your washing your hair, if you can keep the temperature of the water slightly lower, not cold or lukewarm, theres no need to be uncomfortable, but not so hot that it feels too hot against your face, the water temperature should be comfortable enough so that you dont feel too much heat on your face when it touches.

When using a hair dryer you can turn down the heat but if turning down the heat means having to hold the dryer to your hair for longer then it may be equally as bad and not make a difference, also using way too much of a straighening creame may gunge up your hair so much that again it takes longer for the hair dryer to penetrate its way through the hairs, especially round the back where your hair may be thicker and so you end up holding the dryer to your hair for longer.

Its about getting a balance with the use of styling tools as well as the creams, serums and any other products that you use.

Half way through drying your hair with a hair dryer, stop and leave your hair to cool down for about a minute, then use clean hands to touch your hair, especially around the back and sides to see where the hair is mostly dried and where it may still be damp, by doing this you avoid over drying an area of your hair that could dry it out too much and make your hair prone to breakage.

Also some areas of your hair where you have applied a product can clump your hair together where it may look like it is still wet, touch it after letting it cool down and brush it through, you will soon know if your hair in that area is still really wet and in need of further drying.

If your hair does become damaged through excessive heat from regular styling you can always repair your hair slowly but its much better if you can prevent the damage from hapenning in the first place.
